Bougherra confirms: Algeria’s goal is to defend the Arab title – New Algeria

Madjid Bougherra, coach of the Algerian reserve national football team, confirmed today, Tuesday, that his team’s goal in the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup is to maintain the title it won in the previous edition of the competition.

Yesterday, Monday, the second edition of the FIFA Arab Cup Championship was opened, which Qatar is hosting until December 15. The Algerian national team will enter the competition tomorrow, Wednesday, against the Sudanese national team.

Bougherra said, during a press conference held today, Tuesday, in Doha: “As the defending champion, our goal is clear… which is to defend our title. But like everyone else, we are starting from scratch, with new data, and every match for us is a final.”

Bougherra added: “Our goal is to win all the matches, but we must be ready. We focus first on the first match, and through it we chart the path to qualification. Then we talk about the rest of the journey.”

Speaking about the current group, the Algeria national team coach explained that it includes a combination of the experience of players who are living in the end of their careers and who want to graduate honorably, with young elements that form a base for the future, saying: “We brought a mixture of promising young players such as Abada, Boulbina and Khasef… These are the future of the first team.” He added: “There are also players at the end of their career, who want to live the last moments and enjoy them. The group is balanced between youth and experience, and I am happy with the atmosphere within the team.”

Bougherra relied on a rich list

The list also includes the Algerian national football team’s all-time top scorer, veteran Islam Slimani, striker of the Romanian club Cluj.

The Algerian national team will enter the competition tomorrow, Wednesday, at the “Ahmed Bin Ali” Stadium in Doha, BFacing the Sudan national team, For the first round of Group Four, which also includes Iraq and Bahrain.

In the second round, the national team will meet its Bahraini team, on Saturday, December 6, at 14:30 at Khalifa International Stadium. This is before the group stage concludes with a match against the Iraqi national team on Tuesday, December 9, at 18:00 at Khalifa International Stadium.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, where the competition will continue in a knockout format.
