The Minister of Communication, Zouhair Bouamama, stressed, Thursday in Algiers, the necessity of strengthening and strengthening national media spaces to preserve Algeria’s interests, which are exposed to “campaigns of misinformation and falsification of facts.”

Bouamama said, during a public session in the National People’s Assembly devoted to oral questions, that in the face of digital encroachment and rapid transformations, it has become urgent to enhance and strengthen media spaces “in order to preserve the national social fabric and the interests of the country and confront the media misinformation and falsification campaigns launched by some parties.”

In this context, the Minister stressed the need to “prepare a strategy based on a comprehensive approach to provide a suitable environment that enables citizens to access reliable news in a timely manner in order to block the way for those who are disturbed by the strong return of Algeria as a pivotal country in the region.”

By the way, the Minister praised the efforts of media professionals in confronting media misinformation campaigns, calling for “supporting media institutions and accompanying them to provide services with a level of professionalism.”

In this regard, he considered that the decision of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to establish a media city falls within this endeavor.

Regarding the content that is broadcast on social media and sometimes insults the symbols and values of Algerian society, the minister pointed out that “the activity of influencers does not fall within the framework of organized media activity.” However, most of the influencers – as he said – were in harmony with the state’s efforts to raise the quality of the content that they broadcast.

By the way, the Minister stated that “the law obligated audiovisual institutions to respect religious authority and national constants, and the measures reached the point of stopping the broadcast of some series or suspending the broadcast of some channels,” noting, in return, some of the works that were broadcast, which “returned Algerians to watching national channels.”

The Minister of Communications indicated that the Ministry is “working to complete the executive decrees and take all relevant measures, including preparing a draft executive decree on audiovisual production and photography licenses.”
