The Minister of Industry, Yahya Bashir, confirmed today, Thursday, that dealers wishing to invest in car manufacturing in Algeria are obligated to bring in contractors before launching their projects, noting that Algeria is “moving at a steady pace to develop a real industry” in this field.
During a public session in the National People’s Assembly devoted to oral questions, Bashir explained that “the success of the automobile industry in Algeria is essentially linked to the presence of an integrated and diverse network of handlers that ensures continuous nutrition for this industry,” adding that “investors interested in the local manufacture of cars are obligated to bring handlers before launching their projects, which is the basis on which the talks are currently based with various foreign dealers who have expressed their desire to operate in Algeria.”
This step aims – as he said – to build “a real industry based on creating real added value and avoiding previous mistakes in which activity was limited to limited assembly, which leads to wasting effort and money and raising the cost of cars.”
In this context, Mr. Bashir touched on the efforts of his ministerial department aimed at rehabilitating and exploiting the automobile factories that were confiscated for the benefit of the state, according to final judicial rulings, as it “works in coordination with the various sectors concerned to take all necessary measures to accelerate the process of their integration to revive production as soon as possible.”
In the field of electronic and household electrical industries, the Minister highlighted the number of incentive measures taken by the state in order to develop this sector, which has witnessed “remarkable progress” that has made it distinguished by “quality and diversity,” noting that the level reached by Algerian products in this field has made it go beyond the national market to reach foreign markets.
On the other hand, regarding the possibility of launching the electronic chip industry locally, the minister stressed that Algeria seeks to establish “an integrated national system for producing these chips, starting from research, development and design, all the way to production lines, relying on the national experience and competencies available from university graduates and workers in technical centers.”
In this regard, he pointed out that the Ministry of Industry is working to develop the advanced electronics sector, for which it has developed “a road paper to conclude partnerships with international institutions and companies competent in this field with the aim of acquiring technical expertise and advanced technology and training national competencies.”
He also touched on the existing coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which in turn used the Advanced Technologies Development Center to launch a project to produce and manufacture electronic chips for smart cards, as this center has technology that can be used in manufacturing electronic chips, similar to those directed to fuel distribution, transportation, and similar applications.
The Minister pointed out the efforts being made to prepare the future of this precise industry in Algeria by investing in the human element, as an exceptional doctorate has been launched that will open horizons for the development of this precise industry with high added value.
In his response to a question regarding the status of the African Glass Company “Africafair” in Jijel, the Minister confirmed the gradual resumption of its activity after years of cessation, and this is thanks to “the accompaniment it received to achieve the structural and strategic transformation necessary to revive it.”
For its part, the Al-Milia sanitary porcelain factory, affiliated with the “Ceram” company, benefited – says the minister – from “several loans to modernize production methods and acquire raw materials, which helped the factory adapt to market requirements through new products.”
