Algeria continues its commitment to successfully complete polio vaccination

The Ministry of Health renewed its firm commitment to continuing efforts to keep Algeria free of polio, calling on all parents to seize the opportunity of the third and final phase of the campaign.

The Ministry of Health called on all partners and national media to continue actively engaging in supporting national vaccination campaigns, in the service of public health and child health in particular.

Within the framework of the national strategy to eradicate polio, the Director General of Prevention and Health Promotion, Dr. Jamal Fourar, on Monday morning, at the Marriott Hotel in Algiers, supervised the opening of the media day for the benefit of the media family, in the presence of executives from the central administration, experts and specialists in the field.

This media day was dedicated to presenting and evaluating the first and second phases of the national polio vaccination campaign, as well as preparing for the launch of the third phase. Its organization comes within the framework of implementing the approved communication plan for the national vaccination days, under the slogan: “Together, united against polio.”

On this occasion, the Ministry of Health announced the launch of the third and final phase of the national polio vaccination campaign, during the period from January 25 to 31, 2026, which includes all children from two months to five years of age, including children who received vaccination in the previous two phases, with the aim of strengthening individual and collective immunity, and ensuring that Algeria remains free of this disease.

This crucial phase comes as a continuation of the great success achieved by the first and second phases of the campaign, where more than 3.8 million children were vaccinated, with high coverage rates of 95% in the first phase and 96% in the second phase, which reflects the broad involvement of parents and the intensive field efforts made by health professionals and all partners.

The activities of this meeting were devoted to emphasizing the importance of periodic evaluation of national vaccination campaigns, and strengthening coordination and consultation mechanisms among the various stakeholders, to ensure achieving the set goals, improving vaccination coverage indicators, and protecting children’s health.

The detailed results of the first and second phases were also presented, followed by a comprehensive evaluation supported by practical recommendations aimed at improving the campaign’s performance during the third phase, especially with regard to enhancing access to target groups and raising the level of vaccination coverage.

During this media day, basic information and messages were presented regarding the third phase, which depends on the supplementary dose with the injected polio vaccine (VPI), which aims to enhance and consolidate individual immunity, complement the protection previously acquired thanks to the oral vaccine, and prevent serious forms of the disease. The VPI vaccine has been used within the routine vaccination program since 2015, and is characterized by a high level of safety, with almost no side effects.

Participants also stressed the importance of community mobilization, and the pivotal role of the national media in supporting and implementing the national health policy in the field of prevention.

The work was concluded by evaluating the communication and media activities accompanying the National Vaccination Days, with the aim of improving the quality of health messages and ensuring their effective delivery to various segments of society.
