The Minister of State, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Ataf, confirmed today, Sunday, in Algiers, that the relations between Algeria and Somalia are historic and derive their strength from the values that bring together the two countries, namely understanding, solidarity and mutual trust.
In his speech after receiving the Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdel Salam Abdi Ali, who came in Algeria on an official visit, Mr. Ataf pointed out that “Algeria’s interest in the situation in the sisterly state of Somalia was never interrupted, and it was the one who has been standing next to it and supporting its efforts in restoring security and stability.”
In this regard, he highlighted that Algeria’s standing alongside Somalia “was not circumstantial or transient, but rather a firm and rooted historical position based on the full conviction of Algeria that Somalia’s security and stability is the security and stability of the African Horn and the entire African continent.”
Also – Mr. Ataf says – “reflects Algeria’s full involvement in mobilizing both the African Union and the United Nations, in support of the security and stability of Somalia”, which is embodied today “Algeria’s commitment to its double position to the UN Security Council and the African Peace and Security Council to avoid the greatest solidarity and the most effective support for the efforts of the Somali leadership and its endeavors to complete the fight against terrorism and consolidate the foundations of security, stability and development” in the country.
From this perspective, Mr. Atf congratulated his Somali counterpart on the “considered and qualitative and qualitative” strings that Somalia cut on the path of rebuilding strong national and university institutions and recovering its well -being security and economically, as well as the restoration of its position as continental and international, indicating that the most indication of this positive movement is the presence of Somalia today in the UN Security Council as an unusual state and as an active party in the group of the three African members (A3+).
In the context of the gradual return of security and stability in Somalia, Mr. Ataf assured his Somali counterpart, Algeria aspires to “strengthen the historical relations that bring the two countries in its political aspects and economic fields, and even in its human dimensions, by enhancing cooperation in the fields of vocational training and higher education.”
In the same context, they pointed out that they agreed on the necessity of strengthening the institutional structure of bilateral cooperation as well as the importance of enriching the legal framework of inter -relations, adding: “This is what we started to embody today, by signing legal texts aimed at mainly to establish a joint government committee, concerned with economic cooperation and developing a mechanism for political consultations as well as encouraging cooperation in the field of diplomats training.”
