Algeria participates in the International Forum for the Alliance of Civilizations in Riyadh – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the national community abroad, Sofiane Chaib, headed the Algerian delegation participating in the work of the eleventh international forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on December 14 and 15.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the forum was organized this year under the slogan: “Two Decades of Dialogue for Humanity: Advancing a New Era of Mutual Respect and Understanding in a Multipolar World,” with the participation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations and the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Angel Moratinos, along with a number of government representatives and active international figures, as well as young leaders and women active in supporting peace and understanding between cultures. And religions.

The holding of this session coincides with the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, which is a platform for cultural dialogue and international cooperation, with the aim of bridging divisions, combating intolerance, extremism and exclusion, rejecting violence, and confronting the growth of hate speech, marginalization and Islamophobia.

During the high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilizations, Sofiane Chaib, in a speech he delivered on behalf of Algeria, stressed the importance of formulating a comprehensive approach based on enhancing cooperation and strengthening intellectual, cultural, religious and scientific ties between peoples, while stressing the need to support the Alliance of Civilizations initiative and provide it with mechanisms to embody the principles of the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other relevant international instruments.

The Secretary of State also reviewed the efforts made by Algeria on the international scene to promote the values ​​of coexistence in peace, especially by sharing its experience in resolving conflicts peacefully and combating terrorism and violent extremism, inspired by the values ​​embodied by Emir Abdelkader, the founder of the modern Algerian state, as a symbol of dialogue between civilizations and one of the pioneers in establishing the principles of international humanitarian law.

In the same context, Chaib highlighted the national mechanisms adopted by Algeria to reject violence and hate speech and promote the values ​​of tolerance, solidarity, peace, dialogue, dignity and justice, especially through enacting a law to combat hate speech and establishing a national observatory to monitor and address these practices.
