Algeria leads the African Evaluation Summit in Addis Ababa – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

Today, Friday, at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the work of the 35th session of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Evaluation Mechanism began, with the participation of Prime Minister Sefi Gharib, representing the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the current President of the Forum.

Algeria has assumed the presidency of the forum since 2024, where it oversees the discussion of pivotal issues related to strengthening good governance, promoting peace and security, and supporting integration among African countries, in addition to intensifying joint continental action. Algeria is expected to hand over the presidency to Uganda for a period of two years.

The session’s agenda includes five main themes, including: democracy and political governance, economic governance and management, corporate governance, social and economic development, in addition to enhancing the resilience of countries in the face of shocks and disasters.

The participants will discuss the voluntary national assessment reports of a number of member states, while discussing the level of implementation of previous recommendations, and ways to develop the mechanism’s performance and expand the involvement of African countries in it, in addition to discussing the current challenges facing the continent, most notably the issues of peace and security, sustainable development, and financing reform programmes.

The President of the Republic emphasized on several occasions the strategic importance of this mechanism, expressing his confidence in its ability to contribute to finding effective solutions to common challenges, and promoting the exchange of experiences and best practices in the field of good governance at the regional and continental levels.

It is noteworthy that the African Peer Evaluation Mechanism was established in 2003 as a voluntary framework aimed at evaluating the policies and experiences of member states, and consolidating the principles of transparency and good governance through a review mechanism based on cooperation and integration.
