Algeria-Italy: Discussing ways to enhance environmental cooperation and energy security – New Algeria

Today, Thursday, Dr. Mourad Ajal, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, received the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Becchetto Frattin, as part of the latter’s visit and his accompanying delegation to Algeria to participate in the work of this symposium, in implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at strengthening Algerian-Italian economic cooperation, and on the sidelines of the symposium organized by the Bank of Algeria in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, under the title: “North Africa.” – Connecting continents and creating opportunities.

The Ministry’s statement stated that during this meeting, which took place at the Ministry’s headquarters level, and in the presence of the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Algeria, Alberto Cotello, and a number of key officials from the two ministries, Dr. Murad Ajal spoke about the depth of the historical and economic relations between the two countries, especially in the energy field, stressing Algeria’s will to deepen and strengthen the level of cooperation with Italy.

By the way, the Minister emphasized clarifying the vision of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which reflects the Algerian vision, with regard to the electrical interconnection project between the Algerian and Italian electrical networks via the submarine cable, with the aim of supplying the Italian and European markets with electricity. Emphasizing the great potential that Algeria possesses in terms of electricity production, especially its orientation towards the production of renewable energies.

In this context, the Minister stressed the importance of realizing this project for Italy in terms of technical and economic feasibility while respecting the win-win principle.

In another context, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies spoke about the “South Corridor” project as an important project for transporting green hydrogen, stressing the need to work to accelerate the pace of completion of this project on the ground. The Minister also proposed organizing a meeting that brings together the countries concerned with the project, Italy, Germany, Austria and Tunisia, during the next few months to meet in Algeria and take decisions that will lead to the realization of this project on the ground.

For his part, Gilberto Picito Frattin expressed his country’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Algeria, stressing that Algeria is considered a reliable partner, noting in the context the great role that Algeria plays as a reliable supplier of energy in the Mediterranean region, especially towards Italy.
