Algeria is moving to officially criminalize French colonialism

Algeria is moving towards officially criminalizing colonialism, as the National People’s Assembly is preparing to discuss the proposal for this law, which is considered a historic step that reflects the place of this file in the national conscience and memory.

According to a statement by the Council, the President of the National People’s Assembly, Ibrahim Bougali, met with members of the drafting committee for the proposed law criminalizing colonialism, as part of following up on the ongoing preparations to present this proposal, of great national importance, for discussion.

During the meeting, the members of the committee were briefed on the programming of the proposed law within the Council’s work schedule, and it was decided to present it for discussion on December 21, 2025.

The President of the Council closely followed the latest arrangements related to this proposal, giving his directives on the need to ensure careful follow-up of the progress of its discussion, and to ensure the provision of all conditions to hold a responsible and constructive discussion that reflects the place of this file in the national conscience and memory.

The meeting took place in the presence of the Chairman of the National Defense Committee, which is responsible for studying the proposed law, and various relevant legal and regulatory aspects were discussed.

This step coincides with the anniversary of the demonstrations of December 11, 1960, as the President of the Council previously confirmed that this immortal anniversary brings to mind the extent of the suffering that Algerians experienced under colonialism, which practiced the worst types of abuse, torture and contempt, without distinguishing between one component of the country and another of the people of the country, adding that Algeria, which has been united by tragedies and fused by events throughout the ages, has given birth to a solid people who have practiced steadfastness and proven at all stages their ability to overcome adversity. And stand united in the face of injustice and aggression.
