Algeria diversifies its partners to import red meat – New Algeria

Algeria has recently resorted to diversifying its trade partners in order to meet the national market with red meat in anticipation of the advent of Ramadan, as it imported an important shipment of calves destined for slaughter from the State of Brazil, in addition to the interest shown by the guardian authorities towards Ukrainian beef.
WaThe port of Bejaia will recently accept the first docking of a ship loaded with 2,024 heads of calves coming from Brazil. According to a statement from the Port Corporation, this operation falls within the efforts aimed at ensuring that the national market is supplied with red meat, and constitutes the first arrival of its kind during the year 2026.
Also recently, the Ukrainian State Secretariat for Food Security and Consumer Protection announced that veterinary health certificates for slaughtering cows in this country have been approved by the Algerian guardian authorities, which is vital in the context of opening the Ukrainian market for red meat to the Algerian bodies responsible for importing this meat from Ukraine.
These operations carried out by Algeria related to the import of red meat indicate that the country is determined to diversify its partners in the field of importing red meat in order to achieve abundance in the national market and break the price inflammation, especially with the approaching month of Ramadan, during which Algerians consume this type of meat.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had previously confirmed that Algeria had increased its imports of red meat (cows) between 2023 and 2024, moving from about 10,000 tons in 2023 to about 91,000 tons in 2024, expecting these imports to reach 115,000 tons in 2025.
And already Ahmed Makrani, a central director at the Ministry of Internal Trade and Market Control, indicated in media statements that Algeria is in the process of importing 12,000 tons of red meat from Brazil in anticipation of the holy month of Ramadan, adding that Algeria has reached a stage of abundance in all products of widespread consumption, so that work continues to control distribution chains.
In fact, the pace of consumption itself is going abnormally during the first week of the holy month of Ramadan, as there is a spontaneous demand for some consumer goods, especially red and white meat, vegetables, and fruits, which necessitates care to create the necessary abundance, especially red meat.
The authorities responsible for controlling the market and providing products are accelerating the steps taken in anticipation of the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, from which we are only about two weeks away, especially through the establishment of a sectoral committee that is currently overseeing the control of the necessary measures through a forward-looking view that is in the interest of consumers.
