Algeria and Washington: A strategic partnership that exceeds the files of normalization and desert – Algerian dialogue

Although there are two heavy files that put the Algerian -American relations in front of major challenges, namely the Palestinian issue and the dispute of Western Sahara, the course of cooperation between the two countries is going in an upward trend. Some of its stations may be slow, but it is fixed towards a strategic partnership in the areas of security, energy, investment and culture.

Observers ask: How did Algeria succeed in preserving its historical constants, especially its strong support for Palestine and rejecting any “normalization”, and at the same time opening strong cooperation channels with a superpower like Washington?

Security .. the main convergence axis

Since the events of September 11, Algeria has become a major partner for the United States in combating terrorism. Cooperation includes the exchange of intelligence information, joint security training, in addition to Algeria carrying out qualitative field operations against extremist groups.

The US State Department report on the fight against terrorism for the year 2023 praised Algeria’s success in dismantling cells and destroying weapons stores, stressing the continuation of security dialogue and the exchange of experiences between the two parties.

Culture and economics … soft bridges for rapprochement

Washington realizes that Algeria will not join the “Abraham” agreements, especially in light of the war on Gaza and its clinging to the Palestinian issue. Therefore, cooperation focused on education, culture, and academic exchange.

The researcher at the Carnegie Foundation, Sarah Yerkes, says: “Algerian -American relations have not been closer to what they are during the past two years,” noting that popular interaction and academic programs contributed to deepening communication.

Economically, cooperation expanded to include renewable energies, mines, manufacturing industries, medicine and knowledge economy, despite raising American customs duties by 30% on some Algerian products.

The energy sector remains the cornerstone. Algeria, the third largest gas reserve in Africa (2.3 trillion m), is a strategic choice for Europe, especially after the Ukraine crisis and the decline in Russian gas.

Western Sahara .. chronic node

The Western Sahara conflict remains the most prominent points of tension. In April 2025, Washington re -supported Morocco’s autonomy proposal, a position that Algeria rejects and adheres to the right to self -determination to the Sahrawi people.

This dispute has prompted Algeria to freeze its relations with Rabat since August 2021, including closing the airspace in front of Moroccan aviation and stopping the renewal of the gas pipeline contract towards Spain.

The researcher is a luxurious victory from the Middle East Institute that says: “Security cooperation, regional stability, and economic opportunities are more important to Algeria than the issue of joining Abraham’s agreements, and the Sahara conflict remains the biggest challenge in the relationship with Washington.”

Russia and China .. balance strategies

The rapprochement with Washington did not prevent Algeria from strengthening its partnerships with Moscow and Beijing. In 2023, the President Taboun signed strategic agreements that included the declaration of deep partnership with Russia and huge Chinese investments in infrastructure.

Russia focuses on military and security cooperation in Africa, while China relies on the economic and investment model in ports and roads. This gives Algeria a maneuver margin without giving up the principle of non -alignment.

The New York Declaration .. a fixed position for Palestine

On September 12, 2025, Algeria voted in favor of the “New York Declaration” at the United Nations, calling for a two -state solution and condemning the siege on Gaza. Although the United States objected, Algeria clung to its historical position in support of Palestine.

The President Taboun stressed that Algeria will not open any path of normalization before the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Pagogate partnership

In the end, the Palestinian issue nor the Western Sahara issue was a barrier in front of the Algerian -American cooperation. Washington did not pressure Algeria on the path of “normalization”, and Algeria did not stop the partnership due to the American bias of Morocco.

Between the political constants and diplomatic pragmatism, the two parties continue to build a practical partnership entitled: Common interests progress on differences.
