After the rise in fuel prices…more than a million cars use gas in Algeria – New Algeria

While fuel prices are rising, the national stock of used cars has exceeded liquefied petroleum gas/Fuel, the threshold of one million cars by the end of 2023, as confirmed on Tuesday by the Governorate of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency.
The governorate explained in a report devoted to “the development of liquefied petroleum gas/fuel.” Natural gas Compressed gas as essential components of the energy transition in the transportation sector in Algeria. “The national stock of cars used for liquefied petroleum gas/fuel is 850,000 cars in the first half of 2023, and may exceed the threshold of one million at the end of 2023.”
And based on the latest statistics in Energy sectorThe governorate indicated a “significant increase” in the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)/fuel in Algeria, which was recorded starting in the year 2015, especially as a result of the increase in the price of gasoline and diesel that occurred under the financial laws of 2016-2017-2018 and 2020, and because of the support granted for supply. And setting up equipment for liquefied petroleum gas/fuel.
According to the report prepared by the “Clean Transport” working group consisting of representatives from several ministries, the price of liquefied petroleum gas/fuel in Algeria is the cheapest in the world, as it is sold to users at a price five times lower than gasoline and three times lower than diesel.
Accordingly, the demand for liquefied petroleum gas/fuel has been increasing in Algeria since 2016, moving from 290 kilotons (equivalent to oil) in 2015, to more than 1,800 kilotons (equivalent to oil) in the year 2022.
The demand for liquefied petroleum gas/fuel also allowed a “significant” decrease in gasoline consumption, moving from 4.4 million tons in 2015 to 3.3 million tons in 2022, meaning a gasoline economy of more than one million tons in 2022, compared to 2015, according to The same document.
In the same context, it was noted that Algeria has great potential in the field of producing liquefied petroleum gas/fuel and compressed natural gas, stressing that the development of these two products represents “the most appropriate solution on the economic, health and environmental levels.”
In this context, the Authority issued a set of recommendations with the aim of further accelerating the rate of conversion of vehicles to LPG – fuel.
It is also related to providing all existing filling centers with means of distributing LPG-fuel, doubling the number of these centers throughout the country, and strengthening the fleet of trucks-tanks for transporting liquefied gas in order to ensure continuous supply to service stations, in addition to increasing the number of LPG distributors/ Fuel at service stations to eliminate long queues. The report also calls for encouraging and supporting the construction of service stations dedicated exclusively to the distribution of LPG-fuel and considering suspending, encouraging, and even completely canceling the support allocated to converting cars to LPG-fuel and directing it towards establishing infrastructure for distributing LPG-fuel. Local manufacturing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tanks and tanks.
Among the recommendations formulated by the same authority is taking regulatory and technical measures that allow the entry of vehicles equipped with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) equipment into the underground and covered hangars, in addition to introducing a special clause in the book of conditions regulating imported and locally manufactured vehicles, which requires allocating a share of the equipped models. With LPG/fuel combinations with necessary approval.
With regard to compressed natural gas, the Authority noted that this fuel has not yet passed the experimental stage, despite the completion of a large number of works in favor of developing its use as a fuel for cars.
In order to revive the program to develop this fuel, it is necessary to formulate a strategy that will accelerate the process of developing an appropriate environmental system for the deployment of compressed natural gas in the transportation sectors, according to the same authority. In this context, the Authority spoke about several measures that must be taken, especially establishing a necessary regulatory framework for the dissemination of compressed natural gas, a support system for investors in compressed natural gas stations, and financial support for the acquisition of buses and trucks that run on compressed natural gas.
