Abdi renews his association with Nantes, France

The star of the first national handball team, Ayoub Abdi, renewed his association with the French club Nantes until 2029, according to what the club’s management announced on Monday.

Nantes strengthened its right-back by proposing to extend his previous contract, which extends until 2027.

Abdi expressed his satisfaction after the administrative procedure was drawn up, saying: “I am happy to renew my contract and stay here for more years. I am a player who prefers stability in order to focus on handball only.”

The Algerian international was not late in making his mark after joining the club last season.

Ayoub spent five full seasons with Phoenix Toulouse, before joining Nantes last year.

Abdi achieved his first title at club level when he arrived at Nantes.

The native of Chlef lifted the French Super Cup after his club defeated league champion Paris Saint-Germain last season.

Nantes has been Paris’s direct competitor in recent years, having finished in runner-up four times out of five.

Paris Saint-Germain dominates the French League, after winning the title eleven consecutive times.

In turn, Ayoub Abdi has played professionally in France for the eighth year, where he carried the colors of four different clubs: Aix, Grenoble, then Toulouse, and currently Nantes.

The Algerian full-back hopes to help his club overthrow its rival and achieve the league title this season, as the points difference between them does not exceed two points after 14 rounds.

The former Shabab Baraki player will leave his French club early next year, in order to join the first national team participating in the African Cup.

Coach Saleh Boucherio is counting on the best right-back in the French League for the 2023-2024 season to lead the national team in Rwanda.

The continental competition will start on January 20 and extend until January 31, 2026.
