A picture of Saddam’s coin in front of Trump ignites controversy – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

A photo published by Trump’s envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, sparked widespread interaction among Iraqis, after the old Iraqi currency appeared in front of the American president, with the face of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein appearing on it.
The photo was taken during an unspecified meeting between Trump and Savaya.
Where the American President sat in front of a table bearing red hats with his famous slogan, “America is back,” written on it.
And a cup of soft drinks, in addition to the controversial currency.
Savaya commented on the photo, saying: “It was a wonderful day…a wonderful day with the most wonderful people.”
He added: “It was a pleasure to see you, sir,” without explaining the reason for the coin’s presence or the date of the encounter.
Iraqis were divided between those who considered the appearance of Saddam’s image striking, and those who doubted the authenticity of the currency, with speculation that it was a composite or symbolic.
It is noteworthy that Trump announced his appointment as a special envoy to Iraq in October 2025, despite his unconventional background as the owner of a chain of marijuana stores in Michigan.
The absence of any previous governmental or diplomatic experience, which at the time raised questions about this choice.
