A new executive decree allows professors and students to sell patents – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

A new executive decree was issued specifying the model basic law for a public institution of a scientific and technological nature, in a step aimed at enhancing the valorization of scientific research and linking it to the national economy.

According to what was stated in Issue No. 06 of the Official Gazette, this law allows, for the first time, professors, researchers of all ranks, as well as students, the possibility of selling and exploiting the patents of their inventions in exchange for financial returns. It also stipulates clear mechanisms for distributing the income generated from these patents, according to varying percentages among the various parties involved in completing research work, including professors, researchers, students, assistants, and trainees.

The decree also grants institutions of higher education and scientific research, whether university or research, in addition to institutions in the professional community that incubate and support through their means completed research projects and activities that have obtained patents, shares of the proceeds from the sale of these patents, in a way that strengthens the partnership between the university and its economic environment and supports innovation and technology transfer.
