A healthy environment is a basic condition for achieving sustainable public health

The Minister of Health, Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, stressed on Friday in Algiers that sustainable public health cannot be achieved without a healthy environment.

Ait Messaoudane said, in a speech read on his behalf by the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Health, Haj Maati Khalil Reda, on the occasion of the opening of the third meeting of the Algerian Society of Respiratory Medicine, organized in conjunction with the first meeting of the Arab Association of Chest Physicians, that “the policy related to public health has come to include, from now on, epidemiological monitoring of respiratory diseases linked to the environment, given that health and the environment are two inseparable aspects of a single national policy to achieve sustainable development.”

After appreciating the choice of the third forum of the Algerian Society of Respiratory Medicine for the slogan, “Lungs and the Environment,” the Minister considered that “the choice of this topic carries a special significance at a time when environmental challenges are multiplying and their effects on respiratory health are becoming more apparent,” adding that “the fight against respiratory diseases linked to the environment depends above all on prevention and awareness by encouraging healthy lifestyles, reducing smoking, and enhancing safety in the workplace.”

In this context, Masoudan stressed, “The Ministry’s continued support for scientific research by strengthening functional lung exploration centers and consolidating cooperation between sectors to monitor air quality, as well as developing awareness and prevention programs directed to the population.”

After assuming the presidency of the Arab Association of Chest Physicians from the Jordanian doctor, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Tarawneh, the President of the Algerian Society of Respiratory Diseases, Professor Merzak Gharnaout, in turn, confirmed that the third meeting of the Algerian Society of Respiratory Medicine, organized in conjunction with the first meeting of the Arab Association of Chest Physicians, brought together a group of Algerian, Arab and European experts, to discuss the impact of environmental factors on respiratory health and exchange the latest studies and scientific experiments in the fields of prevention and diagnosis. And the treatment.”

He explained that the two events focus on the impact of climate change and environmental pollution on respiratory health and the importance of developing a joint Arab vision to mitigate the repercussions of this phenomenon on citizens.

He added, “By the way, pivotal issues were discussed, including the approval of an Arab protocol to combat smoking, the strengthening of Arab cooperation in diagnosing and treating occupational diseases, and the exchange of medical expertise between Arab and foreign countries.”
