UEFA reveals the stubbornness of the Argentine Federation
The European Union tried to save the second edition of the “Finalissima”, as it suggested to the organizers of the match that it be moved to other countries or that it be held in a home-and-away system.
UEFA clashed every time with the rejection of the champion of the previous edition, who opposed playing in Spain on the grounds of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, with the stands shared equally between the fans of the two teams.
The first match will not be played in Real Madrid’s stronghold on March 27, provided that the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, will host the return match during the international break before the European Championship and Copa America 2028.
UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that if a neutral stadium was found in Europe, the match could be played on 27 March, as planned and announced on 18 December 2025, or on the alternative date of 30 March, and this proposal was also rejected.
The Argentine Federation refused to postpone the confrontation until March 31 or hold it after the 2026 World Cup, which is an option that does not fit the agenda of the Spanish national team.
The European Football Association thanked Real Madrid, the organizing committee and the authorities in Qatar for their support and keenness to organize the date.
