Civil Protection records a terrifying toll in traffic accidents

Civil Protection Services revealed that 1,385 traffic accidents were recorded within a week, leaving 52 dead and 1,659 injured, while 616 fires were extinguished across various states of the country.
A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated that during the period from March 1 to March 7, 2026, civil protection units recorded 22,440 interventions, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, and security services’ coverage of various demonstrations.
With regard to health evacuations, the Protection Units carried out 13,766 interventions, through which 13,169 wounded and sick people were treated and evacuated to hospitals, while the Protection Units recorded 2,467 interventions for 1,385 traffic accidents that led to the death of 52 people and the injury of 1,659 others who were treated and transferred to hospital centers. The heaviest toll recorded in the state of Touggourt was the death of 6 people at the scene of the accidents and the injury of 24 others. As a result of 16 traffic accidents.
Civil protection units also carried out 944 interventions that allowed the extinguishing of 616 fires, including domestic, industrial and various fires, the most important of which were recorded in the state of Algiers 76 fires, Blida 28 fires and Skikda 23 fires, while the same units in the field of various operations carried out 5263 interventions in order to save 374 people in danger and cover 4663 ambulance operations.
On the other hand, regarding incidents related to poisoning with carbon monoxide (Co) gas emitted from various means of heating and water heaters, the protection units carried out 29 interventions that allowed first aid to be provided to 48 people poisoned by carbon monoxide (Co) gas, and then they were transferred to hospital institutions, without recording deaths.
