Voting tomorrow on the law criminalizing French colonialism after fundamental amendments – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

The Parliamentary Committee included important amendments to the draft law criminalizing French colonialism scheduled to be voted on tomorrow, Monday, which included canceling articles related to compensation and protecting national symbols and real estate properties, and limiting themselves to official recognition instead of demanding that France apologize.

The description of treason was also simplified, and the penalty for glorifying colonialism was unified to five years, while the penalty for promoting colonial ideology was increased to ten years, and sexual slavery was included as an established colonial crime. The law involved civil society in preserving memory and guaranteed the dignity of resistance fighters and mujahideen.

The committee affirmed that the law consolidates Algeria’s sovereign position in the memory file, and transforms the demand for official recognition of colonial crimes into a legal and institutional framework that preserves historical facts and the dignity of martyrs, without adhering to demands for compensation or a financial apology.
