The government presents Algeria’s national strategy for confronting major disasters

The government presented, on Saturday, the national strategy for managing major risks for the period extending to the year 2035, within the framework of strengthening disaster prevention and strengthening Algeria’s readiness for rapid intervention in accordance with the Sendai International Framework.

The Prime Minister’s statement of interests stated, “Today, Saturday, March 7, 2026, Prime Minister Seifi Gharib chaired a joint ministerial council meeting devoted to presenting the national strategy for managing major risks for the period extending to the year 2035, which was prepared by national experts, in accordance with the directives of the President of the Republic.”

This strategy, whose implementation is based on annual work plans accompanied by clear goals and defining the responsibilities of each government sector in implementing them, comes within the “Cadre d’action de Sendai” adopted by the United Nations as an international reference for reducing disaster losses and their negative effects. It also constitutes an important building block in the process of strengthening the national system for preventing disaster risks and taking care of their effects, and a practical addition to the new law on prevention, intervention and disaster risk reduction within the framework of sustainable development, issued in 2024, According to the statement of interests.

This new system aims to raise the level of national capabilities in confronting various disaster risks, as well as quickly and effectively dealing with their waste.

For reference, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) is an international agreement adopted by the United Nations in Japan to reduce losses from natural and human-made disasters, and focuses on 4 priorities: understanding risks, strengthening governance, investing in prevention, and preparing for response. It aims to protect sustainable development, and is managed by the United Nations Office.
