The Algerian government is strengthening its national health promotion strategy

The Minister of Health, Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, confirmed that the government has strengthened the national strategy for health promotion, through the multi-sectoral national plan for integrated control of risk factors, in cooperation and coordination with various sectors.
On Tuesday, Secretary-General Mohamed Talhi, on behalf of the Minister of Health, Professor Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, according to a statement by the Ministry, supervised the ceremony to celebrate the World Anti-Obesity Day, organized this year under the slogan “Together, we can change the story of obesity,” in the presence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Algeria, “Katrin Fromm Heuer”, the Director of the United Nations Program to Control AIDS in Algeria, Soraya Alem, representing the representative of the World Health Organization in Algeria, in addition to experts and management frameworks in the central.
The Minister stressed that confronting this disease is a collective responsibility that requires comprehensive mobilization and a coordinated response at the national and global levels, noting the effective contribution and permanent commitment of various partners from United Nations bodies, officials of national bodies, representatives of various ministerial sectors present, experts, and civil society.
The Minister was keen to stress that obesity is no longer only an issue related to appearance or weight, but rather it is a chronic and complex disease that constitutes a major risk factor for developing many diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, as well as some types of cancer, in addition to its psychological and social effects that affect the quality of life and social integration.
The same speaker also pointed out that the transformations witnessed in society’s lifestyle, including changing dietary habits and increasing consumption of products saturated with sugars, fats, and salt, in addition to the lack of physical activity, contributed to the spread of obesity.
In this context, the Minister renewed the Ministry’s commitment to combating this disease, especially through the preparation and distribution of the “National Obesity Management Guide,” which is a reference document intended for health professionals to understand and prevent this disease, which he said is an essential step in awareness and early management of obesity.
In the same context, the Minister of Health stated that the government has strengthened the national strategy for health promotion, through the multi-sectoral national plan for integrated control of risk factors, in cooperation and coordination with the sectors of trade, industry, agriculture, national education, as well as civil society, by organizing awareness and sensitization campaigns aimed at promoting healthy nutrition, encouraging the practice of sports activities, and combating tobacco across the entire national territory.
