US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the historical relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom “is no longer what it was,” in statements he made to the British newspaper The Sun, against the backdrop of a dispute over the use of British military bases.
Trump’s statements came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to allow Washington to use two British bases in Cyprus in the context of the war with Iran, considering that London “was not cooperating,” adding: “I did not imagine seeing the United Kingdom behave like this.”
Trump confirmed, in the telephone interview conducted from the White House on Monday evening, that the relations that were previously described as stronger have become different today, noting that his country now has strong relations with other European countries, while at the same time stressing that the United States “loves the United Kingdom.”
