The African Union adopts a resolution classifying slavery and colonialism as crimes against humanity

Today, Sunday in Addis Ababa, the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union adopted a resolution classifying slavery, deportation and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against the peoples of Africa, praising the efforts made by Algeria in this context.

The adoption of this resolution came on the last day of the thirty-ninth regular summit of the African Union, where participants stressed the importance of member states working in solidarity and collectively to achieve international recognition of these crimes, while keeping this issue under follow-up on the Union’s agenda.

The African Union also noted the progress made in implementing Decision 934 by member states and the African Union Commission and its organs, noting prominent initiatives, including Algeria’s organization of the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa on November 30 and December 1, 2025 in the capital, Algiers.

It is noteworthy that the Republic of Togo had submitted a draft resolution that classifies slavery, deportation and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against African peoples.
