18 Senegalese fans detained in Morocco, after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, announced that they had entered a hunger strike, since yesterday, Friday.
The accused fans said that they have been waiting “to know the charges against them,” since last January 18, when they were arrested after the final match of the African Cup of Nations, which took place in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, between the national team of the host country of the tournament, Morocco, and its Senegalese counterpart.
According to what was reported on the website,Al Arabiya NetThe defendants’ lawyer stated that the arrested Senegalese fans said in a letter that the police interrogated them in French and Arabic, while they only understood the local “Wolof” language in Senegal.
They added: “Considering that they are depriving us of our right to justice, we have decided from today (Friday) to begin continuous fasting with prayer and supplication, until Moroccan justice gives us the opportunity to express ourselves.”
These fans are being prosecuted on charges of “contributing to acts of violence during a sports match,” “entering the stadium floor using force,” “damaging sports equipment,” “committing violence against public force personnel,” and throwing “solid materials that caused harm to others.”
They had appeared before the Court of First Instance in Rabat in a first session two weeks ago, which was decided to be delayed at the request of their lawyers and the lawyers of the civil rights claimants “to prepare the defence,” while the second session was delayed Thursday due to a strike by lawyers.
The final session of the African Cup of Nations “CAN 2025”, which took place from December 21 to January 18 last year, witnessed many farces and scandals that seemed to serve the purpose of facilitating the task of the organizing country in obtaining the continental title after half a century of waiting.
