Algeria uses technology to prevent forest fires

Experts from the World Bank and national experts organized, on Tuesday, a technical working session devoted to presenting the broad outlines of the project related to developing an early warning system to prevent forest fires in Algeria, which was initiated by the Ministry of the Interior, Local Governments and Transport and the Ministry of Finance, in cooperation with the National Delegation for Major Risks and the General Directorate of Forests.

The session, which was organized in the state of Bejaia, was attended by the first group of mayors of the municipalities most affected by forest fires, along with representatives of the various sectors concerned, such as civil protection, forest conservation, transportation, public works, and others.

This meeting was devoted to presenting the project objectives and methodology, as well as the needs related to data collection, in addition to opening the door to discussion and exchanging opinions with the participants, listening to their concerns and expectations, as well as sharing relevant information among the various stakeholders.

The state of Bejaia was chosen as a model site for the implementation of this project, given its forest characteristics, dense plant cover, and important environmental diversity, in addition to its high degree of vulnerability to the dangers of forest fires, especially in light of the climate changes that the region has witnessed in recent years.

Earlier this week, the governor of the state supervised the installation of workshops for the project to establish an early warning system to prevent forest fires, which was initiated by the Ministry of the Interior in coordination with the National Delegation for Major Risks and the World Bank, in the presence of Abdul Hamid Afra, the National Delegate for Major Risks, a representative of the World Bank, accompanied by experts and specialists, a representative of the General Directorate of Forests, a representative of the General Directorate of Civil Protection, members of the Security Committee, heads of departments, and executive directors concerned with this project.

Workshops were held that included international experts from the World Bank and national specialists, along with all relevant local stakeholders, especially the Forest Governorate and civil protection departments. These experts will organize field trips across the various municipalities concerned with forest fires, with the aim of field inspection and closely monitoring the efforts made by the various state departments within the framework of preventing and combating forest fires.

The governor stressed that the highest authorities in Algeria attach great importance to protecting forest wealth, as the forest fire prevention system has been strengthened in recent years within the framework of the national plan to combat fires, by strengthening human and material means, in addition to integrating advanced technologies and modern techniques in the fields of monitoring, early warning and rapid intervention.
