Civil Protection records a heavy toll in traffic accidents

Civil Protection Services revealed that 1,051 traffic accidents were recorded within a week, leaving 25 dead and 1,189 injured, while 18 deaths were recorded as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated that during the period from January 18 to 24, 2026, civil protection units recorded 26,591 interventions, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, and security services’ coverage of various demonstrations.

For health evacuations, the protection units carried out 16,778 interventions, through which 16,642 wounded and sick people were treated and evacuated to hospitals, while in the context of traffic accidents, the same units recorded 1,882 interventions for 1,051 traffic accidents that led to the death of 25 people and the injury of 1,189 others who were treated and transported to hospital centers. It is considered the heaviest toll recorded in the state of Boumerdes with the death of 4 people at the scene of the accidents. 51 others were injured as a result of 41 traffic accidents.

Civil protection units also recorded 713 interventions that allowed the extinguishing of 439 fires, including domestic, industrial and various fires, the most important of which were recorded in the state of Algiers 64 fires, Blida 32 fires and Annaba 27 fires, while the same units in the field of various operations carried out 7218 interventions in order to save 650 people in danger and cover 6453 ambulance operations.

On the other hand, the protection services carried out 58 interventions regarding incidents related to poisoning with carbon monoxide (Co) gas emitted from various means of heating and space heaters, allowing first aid to be provided to 133 people poisoned by carbon monoxide (Co) who were transferred to hospital institutions, with the death of 18 people poisoned by carbon monoxide gas recorded.
