Mexico: Violent armed attack on a football field

Eleven fans died in an armed attack on a soccer stadium in Mexico’s Guanajuato province, according to government authorities.

Mayor Cesar Brito revealed that an armed group affiliated with a local gang entered one of the Loma de Flores stadiums in the city of Salamanca after an amateur match, at exactly five o’clock on Sunday evening.

The gunmen opened fire randomly at those present at the scene, before they fled towards an unknown destination.

Ten people died immediately, while the number rose to 11 after medical teams failed to treat the remaining victim in the hospital.

Six individuals were also injured, including a woman and a minor, according to the Guanajuato Provincial Prosecutor.

The country is at war against drug cartels

Like the rest of Mexico’s provinces, the state of Guanajuato is home to the two most violent and well-known drug trafficking gangs: the first is the “Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel” and its arch enemy, the “Jalisco New Generation Cartel.”

The echo of these two criminal organizations reached foreign countries, such as the neighboring United States of America.

For example, the US Drug Enforcement Agency has offered a reward of ten million US dollars for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the leader of the Jalisco Cartel, known as “Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes.”

The city of Salamanca witnessed the assassination of five people, 24 hours before the football stadium massacre, according to what the Mexican channel “In MAS” reported.

Under the leadership of its President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico has harnessed great material resources to combat drug gangs with the help of its allies, led by the United States of America.

In recent years, the country has suffered from the control of these criminal organizations, whose turnover exceeds the budgets of some countries.

It should be noted that the United States of America reined in the most dangerous drug trafficker of the new millennium in 2017.

The DEA arrested Joaquín Guzmán, known as “El Chapo,” the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, and sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2019.
