Soon.. Launching a digital platform to market aquaculture products – New Algeria

The Director General of Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture, Miloud Tria, chaired a coordination meeting with the Directorate General’s executives and in the presence of representatives of the National Livestock Nutrition Office ONAB, devoted to preparing for the launch of the digital platform for marketing marine and freshwater aquaculture products, especially the royal cod (Daurade), the sea wolf (Loup de mer) and the red tilapia (Tilabia).

The Directorate explained in a statement, today, Wednesday, that the development of this digital platform comes in response to the problems recorded in the field of marketing some aquaculture products, which constituted one of the most prominent obstacles to expanding production, especially among small producers and farmers practicing this activity, including breeding integrated with agriculture.

In this context, a public company affiliated with the marine fishing and aquatic sector, a branch of the National Livestock Nutrition Office ONAB, was created under the name “ONAB Aquaculture et Pêche”, within the framework of practical measures aimed at finding sustainable solutions to the marketing problem. The Bureau has actually begun the process of marketing aquaculture products through its sales points, in implementation of the agreement signed with the Algerian Chamber for the same sector.

This digital platform is the first of its kind, as it allows the creation of a national database for marine and freshwater aquaculture producers, and enables every producer who faces difficulties in marketing its production to record the quantities offered, in order to undertake its marketing by the aforementioned public company. The platform also allows product converters to register and determine their areas of activity, ensuring a direct link between them and producers and points of sale.

The platform also provides the ability to determine the production calendar and the quantities produced for each product and by type, in addition to preparing accurate statistics on the number of producers and the size of national production, which facilitates the implementation of the approved incentive mechanisms, especially those directed to producers of red tilapia, which is represented by allocating a grant of 50 dinars for each kilogram of product.

The platform also includes the involvement of the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, as the professional representative of producers, in following up on relevant data, in addition to enabling the Animal Health Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries to access the platform and view producers’ health control requests, in a way that enhances health control and product quality.

For reference, this step came within the framework of efforts aimed at developing the Aquaculture Division and improving marketing mechanisms for its products.
