Civil Protection records a horrific toll in traffic accidents

Civil Protection Services revealed that 1,191 traffic accidents were recorded within a week, leaving 34 dead and 1,464 injured, while 18 deaths due to carbon monoxide gas were recorded.

A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated that during the period from December 28, 2025 to January 3, 2026, civil protection units recorded 22,698 interventions, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, and security services’ coverage of various demonstrations.

For health evacuations, the protection units carried out 14,161 interventions, through which 13,763 wounded and sick people were treated and evacuated to hospitals, while in the context of traffic accidents, the same units carried out 2,073 interventions for 1,191 traffic accidents that led to the death of 34 people and the injury of 1,464 others who were treated and transferred to hospital centers. It is considered the heaviest toll recorded in the state of M’sila, with 4 people dying at the scene of the accidents and injured. 52 others as a result of 36 traffic accidents.

On the other hand, the protection services recorded 802 interventions that allowed the extinguishing of 469 fires, including domestic, industrial and various fires, the most important of which were 52 fires recorded in the state of Algiers, and 22 fires in each of the states of Blida and Tipaza, while the same units in the field of various operations carried out 5,662 interventions in order to save 591 people in danger and cover 4,887 ambulance operations.

Regarding incidents related to poisoning with carbon monoxide gas (Co) emitted from various means of heating and water heaters, the protection units recorded 71 interventions that allowed the provision of first aid to 133 people poisoned by this dangerous gas who were transferred to hospital institutions, with the death of 18 people poisoned by carbon monoxide gas recorded.
