The brilliance of the Greens turns into a political crisis in France!

In light of the charged atmosphere in which France is experiencing, an opinion article published by the French website Le Figaro reopened the issue of immigration and Algeria in a strange way, following some Algerian fans’ celebrations of the national team’s successive wins in the African Cup. The article, written by journalist Celine Pina, went far in holding Algeria and the Algerian community responsible for the internal tensions that France has been experiencing for years.

From this standpoint, the author chose to link limited riots, which accompanied sports celebrations, with what she described as the failure of integration and the spread of “decolonial” thought, considering that immigration, especially coming from Algeria, constitutes an obstacle to coexistence in French society. However, this proposal ignores a basic fact, which is that France itself has failed to provide a fair and comprehensive model for the integration of its citizens of immigrant origins.

In the same context, the article ignores that sports celebrations, regardless of the identity of the winner, often witness violations, which has repeatedly happened in France during French sports coronations without the accusation being generalized against the French people or their culture. But when it comes to Algerians, the event becomes an opportunity to attack and question belonging and loyalty.

Moreover, the article accuses Algeria of using the memory of colonialism to incite against France, forgetting that this memory is not a political invention, but rather a documented historical reality. The French colonization of Algeria lasted 132 years, and witnessed crimes and acts of repression that were recognized by official French figures and institutions.

On the other hand, it seems that some French platforms prefer to avoid addressing their real social problems, such as marginalization, discrimination, and school failure, by shifting responsibility abroad, specifically to Algeria.

In conclusion, Le Figaro’s article appears as a new example of a French media discourse that attacks Algeria instead of holding itself accountable. Algeria is not the cause of the integration crisis in France, nor is the Algerian community a security or cultural problem. The real problem lies in French policies that have not yet succeeded in achieving the equality they raise as a slogan.
