A heavy toll of civil protection interventions within 24 hours – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

During the period extending from December 31, 2025 to January 1, 2026 at eight in the morning, the Civil Protection Units recorded a total of 3,002 interventions across the various states of the country, with an intervention rate every 28 seconds, after receiving distress calls from citizens.

These interventions included various areas of civil protection activity, as 2,071 health evacuations and 472 various interventions were recorded, including traffic accidents, domestic accidents, gas suffocation, fires, in addition to tasks related to public security.

Traffic accidents:
The Civil Protection Services carried out 180 interventions into traffic accidents, resulting in the death of one person on the spot and the injury of 205 people with varying serious injuries. They were treated and transferred to local hospitals.
The heaviest death toll was recorded in the state of Boumerdes, following a collision between a motorcycle and a truck on the Khamis Khechna bypass road, which led to the death of a person on the spot.

Carbon monoxide suffocation accidents:
Civil protection units intervened to rescue 6 people who were suffocated by carbon monoxide gas emitted from heating devices and water heaters, in the states of Naama, Algiers and Setif, while these incidents resulted in 3 deaths.

Fires:
3 urban and industrial fires were extinguished in Bashar, Boumerdes and Bejaia:

  • Bashar: A house fire was caused by a butane gas leak. Two people suffered superficial burns and were taken to the local hospital.

  • Boumerdes: A fire in a plastics manufacturing workshop on the ground floor of a building in the Halaymiya neighborhood was brought under control without any injuries reported.

  • Bejaia: A jewelry store fire on Al-Saghir Street required the evacuation of 15 residents as a preventive measure, without casualties.

Civil Protection in the state of Al-Tarf also intervened following a gas explosion inside the kitchen of an apartment on the second floor of a building in the Burj Nam neighborhood in Al-Daraan, during plastering work, which resulted in two people being injured after they fell from the second floor, in addition to a third person in a state of shock, and all the injured were transferred to the local health sector.

The Civil Protection Services confirmed that rapid intervention contributed to controlling the fires, preventing them from spreading to neighboring buildings, and protecting lives and property.
