Africa Cup of Nations: Senegal defeats Botswana and warns its rivals

Senegal scored three goals against Botswana in the second match of Group C, for the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

Bayern Munich’s German striker, Samuel Jackson, excelled by scoring a brace in the match that was held on the grounds of Tangier Grand Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The player, loaned from Chelsea until the end of the season, deserved the Best of the Match award after he became the first to score a brace in the 35th edition of the continental competition.

Solid defense and dominant midfield

The squad of Senegalese coach Pape Thiaw showed great balance between the three lines against Botswana.

Star Sadio Mane’s teammates controlled the ball for most of the match, and they also kept their net clean thanks to the successful interventions of the defense quartet, led by captain Khalidou Koulibaly.

Senegal’s opening of the scoring was delayed until the 40th minute, when Jackson received a ground ball sent by his colleague Ismael Jacobs.

Botswana goalkeeper Goetsione Foko made several saves in the first half, leaving the two teams 1-0 apart.

The rest of the Botswana team was not as good as its goalkeeper, as the midfielders and defense continued to make mistakes while the attackers were unable to find the necessary solutions.

Crystal Palace’s English winger, Ismail Sarr, took advantage of his colleague recovering the ball in midfield, to receive it and provide a pass on a plate to Jackson inside the penalty area.

The Bavarian club striker finished the attack in an optimal manner, as he dribbled past both the defender and the goalkeeper and deposited the ball into the net in the 58th minute.

Mane and Jackson had other opportunities to deepen the gap, but they failed to convert them into the net.

Senegalese fans waited until the 89th minute, to watch substitute Sherif Ndiaye, the Turkish Samsunspor striker, score the third goal.

The Teranga Lions took sole lead in Group C after this victory, as they outperformed the Democratic Republic of Congo on goal difference.

The Congolese, led by Frenchman Sebastien Dusaber, defeated Benin with a goal scored by striker Theo Bongonda in the 16th minute of the first half.
