A scientific day to discuss the problems of access to treatments for rare diseases

A scientific day with a national dimension was organized by the Algerian Society of Economic Pharmacy, in cooperation with the Algerian Federation of Pharmacy, devoted to discussing issues of managing rare diseases and chronic diseases, with a special focus on the problems of access to treatments in public health systems.
This meeting came within the framework of a scientific and organizational approach aimed at enriching the discussion between decision-makers, health professionals, and concerned bodies, about ways to improve access to treatment, ensure continuity of care, and improve the quality of care for patients, taking into account the challenges of sustainability and the field reality of the national health system.
Such a scientific day is an opportunity to exchange expertise and experiences between various actors in the health sector, with the aim of formulating practical recommendations that are applicable on the ground and contribute to improving the lives of patients with rare and chronic diseases.
The program of this scientific day was built around three main axes that covered basic aspects of the problem of managing rare and chronic diseases in Algeria.
The first topic dealt with a comprehensive presentation of the current situation of rare diseases in Algeria, highlighting the health and socio-economic burden that these diseases impose on patients, their families, and the health system in general.
The currently adopted models of care were also discussed, and the problem of providing medicines for rare diseases, which are often characterized by their high cost and limited availability in the markets. This issue is of particular importance in light of the difficulty of many patients in obtaining the necessary treatments.
The hospital’s role in producing data in real-life conditions was also highlighted, which is an essential aspect for understanding the effectiveness and safety of available treatments, and providing a national database that helps in making evidence-based decisions.
The second topic focused on the challenges of accessing treatments for chronic diseases, especially modern and innovative treatments that are witnessing continuous development. These treatments pose significant challenges in terms of cost and availability, especially in health systems with limited resources.
The organization of treatment paths, from early diagnosis to periodic follow-up, and the impact of this on the resources available in the health system, were discussed. This topic also addressed appropriate evaluation approaches for contexts with limited resources, ensuring a balance between the effectiveness of treatment and the financial sustainability of the system.
The third axis was devoted to presenting and discussing the most prominent findings and lessons learned from the latest international conference of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Economic Outcomes Research (ISPOR), a leading global organization in the field of economic pharmacy and health technology evaluation.
Developments in the field of economic pharmacy, health technology assessment, and decision support models that can be used in the Algerian context were highlighted. This axis is of particular importance in keeping pace with global developments and adapting them to local specificities.
National and international experts, university professors, hospital practitioners and pharmacists, in addition to representatives of professional bodies and institutions, participated in this scientific day, within the framework of a multidisciplinary scientific discussion and exchange of experiences.
This broad participation provided a unique opportunity to share experiences and good practices, whether at the national or international level, which contributes to enriching the discussion and developing innovative solutions to existing challenges.
Through this joint initiative, the Algerian Society of Economic Pharmacy and the Algerian Federation of Pharmacy affirmed their commitment to supporting the development of economic pharmacy in Algeria, consolidating a culture of data-based decision-making, and contributing to improving access to treatment for the benefit of patients with rare and chronic diseases.
This initiative reflected a growing awareness of the economic importance of pharmacy as a tool for rationalizing health spending and improving the quality of patient care at the same time. Decisions based on scientific and economic data contribute to allocating limited resources more effectively, ensuring that treatments reach those who really need them.
The organizers hope that this scientific day will constitute a starting point for more comprehensive future initiatives that contribute to building a fair and sustainable health system that puts the patient at the heart of its concerns and guarantees his right to treatment regardless of the nature of his illness, geographical location, or social status.
