Towards integrated, patient-centered pharmaceutical practices

On Saturday, the ninth national conference of the Algerian Federation of Pharmacy was concluded at the Sheraton Hotel in Algiers, under the slogan “Pharmaceutical practices are evolving towards integrated, personalized and patient-centered health care.”
This scientific event was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which extended over three days from 18 to 20 December.
In his opening speech, Professor Abdelhakim Boudis, President of the Algerian Federation of Pharmacy, stressed that this session had a special character as it coincided with the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Federation, saying: “Ten years of continuous work and the pursuit of bringing together pharmacists from various fields of practice and establishing an inclusive professional space based on dialogue, integration, and service to the profession and public health.”
Boudis added: “The Algerian Federation of Pharmacy was established based on a clear vision based on uniting pharmacists from all fields of practice and making difference a source of strength and not a cause of division. The pharmacist, regardless of his position or specialty, remains an essential actor in health care and is responsible for the quality of treatment and patient safety.”
The Algerian pharmaceutical industry towards African markets
The President of the Federation pointed to the remarkable development witnessed by the Algerian pharmaceutical industry, stressing that “today the Algerian pharmaceutical industry is witnessing a remarkable development in terms of production capabilities and quality of products, and is no longer limited to meeting national needs only, but rather carries a clear ambition to move towards the African and Arab markets and contribute to strengthening regional pharmaceutical security.”
Bodis expressed his pride in receiving pharmacists and experts from brotherly and friendly countries, saying: “We are honored to receive among us pharmacists and experts from Senegal, Tunisia, Jordan, Britain, Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Cameroon. Your presence with us today dedicates the African and Arab dimension to our profession and confirms the importance of cooperation and exchange of experiences.”
Establishing two new scientific societies
In a related context, Bodis announced the establishment of two new scientific societies, saying: “We are pleased that this conference coincides with the announcement of the establishment of two scientific societies that confirm the maturity of pharmaceutical practice in Algeria and the diversification of its fields.”
The first is the Algerian Society of Economic Pharmacy, which specializes in pharmaceutical economics and the evaluation of health technologies, and whose presidency is supervised by Dr. Mohamed Yacine Achouri. The second is the Algerian Society of Cosmetics, headed by Dr. Younes Zarish.
Health security and digital transformation
For his part, Dr. Nour El-Din Mitiwi, Chairman of the National Council of the Pharmacists Authority, emphasized the strategic role of pharmacy in national health security, saying: “Pharmacy occupies a strategic position in the country’s security apparatus. The pharmacist is a first-line actor in drug control, continuity of supply, pharmacovigilance and health alert.”
Mitioui added: “Digitalization and e-health today constitute indispensable tools for responding to these requirements. Digitization of professional data, drug tracking, interoperability of information systems, development of secure platforms for authorization and follow-up analyzes are no longer an option, but rather are strategic necessities for the Algerian state.”
In a statement to the press, Mohamed Yassin Achouri, Secretary-General of the Algerian Federation of Pharmacy, explained that “the pharmacy sector is currently witnessing the registration of several innovative medicines in Algeria, but the prices of some of them are sometimes high, which imposes the necessity of opening an in-depth scientific discussion about the mechanisms and methods for evaluating medicines.”
Ashouri added: “The conference witnessed the participation of pharmacists and experts from several countries, with the aim of benefiting from their experiences and expertise, especially in the field of evaluating pharmaceutical materials and innovative medicines.”
A scientific day dedicated to economic pharmacy
Ashouri pointed out that “the third day of the conference, corresponding to December 20, coincided with the first scientific day organized by the Algerian Society of Economic Pharmacy in coordination with the Federation, where two basic topics were addressed: rare diseases, and the evaluation of drugs used in the treatment of chronic diseases, especially diabetes and high blood pressure.”
Academic and institutional support
For his part, Director of the University of Health Sciences, Gernaout Marzak, affirmed the university’s commitment to supporting scientific initiatives, saying: “We at the University of Health affirm our commitment to supporting scientific initiatives of this kind and encouraging innovation and knowledge exchange among researchers, which contributes to raising the level of academic training and improving the quality of health services provided to citizens.”
The representative of the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry also stressed the importance of research and development in the sector, noting that “Algeria seeks, through its national strategies in the field of the pharmaceutical industry, to make this sector provide health security for the citizen and work to permanently develop the pharmaceutical industry by introducing the latest technologies and the latest innovations.”
The conference program included 46 scientific sessions, including lectures, round tables, applied workshops, and advanced training courses, covering all fields of pharmacy, from hospital pharmacy, medical biology, pharmacovigilance, industrial pharmacy, precision medicine, pharmacoeconomics, digitalization and artificial intelligence, to cosmetics and the export of pharmaceutical products.
The conference concluded with a ceremony honoring a number of scientific figures who contributed to the development of the field of pharmacy at the national and international levels, in addition to crowning the best scientific posters.
