The Syrian national team surprised its Qatari counterpart in the second group match of the 2025 Arab Cup, which will be held in Qatar until December 18.

The Eagles of Qasioun fell behind with a goal by substitute Alaa El-Din Ahmed, before captain Omar Kharbin scored a wonderful goal in the ninetieth minute.

Al-Wahda’s Emirati striker stunned Al-Annabi’s defense and his goalkeeper, Mishal Barshim. With a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

A desperate defense and ruins do the rest of the job

The Qatari team took the initiative from the beginning, and created the first opportunity to score through Mohamed Manai in the ninth minute.

All of Annabi’s balls passed through captain Akram Afif, the most prominent member of the team, who was deliberating on playmaking and trying to end the attacks.

For its part, the Syrian national team adopted the method of the first match against Tunisia, where it clustered in its areas and kept anticipating its opponent’s mistakes to launch counterattacks.

The Syrians searched for their first star, Omar Kharbin, and every time they regained the ball.

The Eagles of Qasioun had what they wanted, as Kharbin almost scored the first goal in the 21st minute.

The veteran player raised the ball over goalkeeper Barshim, but the quick return of defender Mohamed Waad saved the situation.

Hammam Al-Amin mishandled the wonderful pass given to him by Afif in the 27th minute, as he shot a low ball that hit the right post of goalkeeper Elias Hadiya.

As the two teams returned from the changing rooms, Qatar had the most dangerous opportunity in the match, but the courage and acumen of defender Ahmed Faqa prevented Abdulaziz Hatem from scoring.

A second shot by Hammam Ahmed resulted in a penalty kick, which Guatemalan referee Mario Escobar zeroed the first time before canceling it after returning to video technology.

The decision upset Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, who did not hesitate to vent his anger at the refereeing team, stressing that the Syrian defender had pushed Hammam and committed the mistake.

The Qataris’ pressure generated an explosion in the Syrian team’s defence, as substitute Ahmed Alaa El-Din jumped high and fired a header that announced his team’s lead in the 77th minute.

This goal prompted Muhammad Al-Salkhadi’s teammates to leave their areas and venture with the largest number of players in the attack.

The relief came through the brilliant Omar Kharbin. The latter took responsibility as team captain and scored the equalizing goal with a missile shot in the 90th minute.
