1,600 organ transplant operations were performed in Algeria within 40 years – New Algeria

Disclosure of the Director of Medical Activities and Chairman of the Medical Ethics Committee Mustafa Pasha University HospitalProfessor Rachid Belhaj, said that the field of organ transplantation in Algeria has witnessed remarkable development during the last forty years, but this progress is still faced by a number of challenges, most notably the shortage of donors and the absence of a culture of donation within society.
Belhaj confirmed in statements this Wednesday, as part of the “Guest of the Morning” program on the first radio channel, that Algeria has performed 1,600 organ transplant operations since 1986, pointing out that remarkable progress has been recorded during the last three years, at the level of the organ transplant unit at the University Hospital Center in Batna, where about 60 percent of the operations have been completed. Kidney transplant registered at the national level, a number he considered advanced compared to a number of Maghreb countries.
In the same context, the first guest said that the first organ transplant operations in Algeria date back to the year 1977 at Mostaqa Pasha University Hospital, and it was a corneal transplant, followed by the first kidney transplant in 1988, highlighting the great role that hospitals played in developing these medical practices in parallel with the development of modern medicine and surgical techniques, pointing out at the same time that these operations require advanced techniques and coordination between several medical departments, which requires providing specialized training for medical teams.
